Sambo is a Russian martial art and combat sport. Sambo initially translates to self-defense without weapons. Originating in the Soviet Red Army in the 1920’s Sambo was used to train soldiers the use of hand to hand combat techniques. Sambo uses both ground fighting, and grappling aspects like many other martial arts such as Judo and Wrestling but incorporates many other elements such as throwing, ground submissions, punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes. Sambo was initially developed for military use as a means to end a fight as quickly and efficiently as possible. Over the years Sambo developed into its own fighting style used by many famous martial artist’s today.
